ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born in Harold Wood and living in Essex, Alex Creighton is an artist who explores contemporary culture through playful visual commentary.

"My process is often homogenous, with interlinking ideas from itself pushing the work forward, and this reflects my interests in past and present eras, and even the future. I often takes cues from popular culture, media and music from the last 60 years, and I’m heavily inspired by the fantastical, curated world that pop culture exists in. While my sources aren’t always explicitly referenced, it often comes through within my use of materials – I enjoy using bright colours and playful finishes such as glitter, gradients, and iridescence, to bend and change our day-to-day life and bring my work a touch out of reality.

For my end of degree research, I focused on how electronic music and art interacts with one another. I find that music is representative of my process at times: an abstract, curated visual language inspired by rhythms, patterns and structures. While my work can be seen as ‘retro’ and takes a lot of cues from the past, it is also of our time: I embrace modern technology, music, fashion, film and art, and I’m interested in using my work to blur the boundary between physical and digital reality within contemporary pop-culture.

My intention first and foremost is to make work that is aesthetically pleasing and open to interpretation by a viewer – my work is almost a form of escape, and creating bizarre, funky work allows me to do that. I hope a viewer can find solace in my work, perhaps in the same way I do when I’m listening to music, or making my art.”
